SAS 120: Required Supplementary Information
Author: Perry M. Henderson, CPA, MPA

Description:
This course provides detailed explanation of the new performance and reporting requirements related to required supplementary information.

The most significant change that SAS 120 introduces to previous standards is the requirement that auditors place an explanatory paragraph in their independent auditors' reports on the entity's basic financial statements in all cases in which required supplementary information is presented. Under previous standards, an explanatory paragraph was required only when departures from standards were present, such as the omission of some or all of the required supplementary information, inability of the auditor to apply certain limited procedures, material departures from prescribed guidelines for measuring or presenting the required supplementary information, or unresolved doubts about that information.

SAS 120 supersedes SAS 52, (AU section 558, Required Supplementary Information.)

Upon completion of this course, the user should be able to:

  • Identify required supplementary information and distinguish it from other types of information that may accompany financial statements.
  • List the professional requirements related to required supplementary information.
  • Identify the auditor's reporting requirements and objectives for required supplementary information.
