Fraud Detection: Consideration of Fraud in a Financial Statement Audit

This course provides a detailed overview of a major new exposure draft issued by the Auditing Standards Committee, Consideration of Fraud in a Financial Statement Audit. Given that users and regulators have placed an added emphasis on fraud detection, knowledge of this standard is crucial to auditors. This course provides a detailed summary of the standard. It reviews the history of the Exposure Draft and provides an overview of SAS No. 99. The course reviews the characteristics of fraud and the requirements of the Auditor when investigating fraud. It concludes with a discussion of Auditor communications.

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify the two types of misstatements in financial statements;
  • Identify management's responsibilities for detecting and reporting fraud;
  • State the reasons why it is difficult to discover fraud;
  • Describe the three objectives of the auditor with respect to fraud; and
  • State the various definitions pertinent to fraud.
